Efrat Furst suggests that for practical application of the Reconsolidation effect to acquiring new knowledge the following steps are required:

  1. Prior knowledge exists
  2. Prior knowledge is active
  3. Trigger predictions - while retrieving new knowledge think about how it can be used and what predictions can be made (see also Question Formulation Technique)
  4. Make meaningful connections to new information
  5. Allow time for (re) consolidation page
