Question Formulation Technique

Question Formulation Technique

A strategy for formulating effective questions for use in any context, but initially developed to facilitate parents in participating in educational decisions about their children.

Designed to stimulate both divergent and convergent thinking, and to encourage meta-cognition about the questioning process, the Right Question Institute summarise the technique as:

  • Establish your focus
  • Produce as many questions as possible without stopping to evaluate
  • Improve questions
  • Prioritise questions and plan next steps
  • Reflect on the process and the effectiveness of your questions
  • Repeat

The approach can be framed as an application of Design Thinking to the optimisation of questions in a given socio-political context.
